>> pelley: good evening. nearly a year after adam lanza murdered 20 first graders and six adults at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut, we know more tonight about what happened that day but not the one thing everyone wants to know-- why he did it. the final prosecutor's report out late today says lanza had significant mental health issues but was under no extreme emotional disturbance that would explain his actions. the report said lanza had a fascination with mass shootings and firearms but he displayed no aggressive or threatening tendencies. along with the report, prosecutors released this photograph of lanza's bushmaster semiautomatic rifle. we have more now on this report from elaine quijano. >> reporter: this is the shattered front glass window shot out by adam lanza so he could entered enter the locked sandy hook elementary school. the report says it was 9:35:39

when police received the first 911 call. >> sandy hook school caller is indicating someone is shooting in the building. >> reporter: by 9:39 the first officer arrived, a:40, police recall hearing a last gunshot. police officers enter almost six minutes after first getting there. the report says police were operating under the assumption there was more than one shooter. mike mcgowan was one of the first newtown police officers inside. we spoke to him last december. >> it was completely dark. and there was nobody in the halls. >> reporter: what did you hear? >> we didn't hear anything? we could basically just smell gun powder and we started moving down. >> reporter: the report concludes lanza was already dead when police entered. he killed principal dawn hochsprung and school psychologist mary sherlach in a hallway. he then went into the main office where the staff was hiding from him.
4:33 pm
lanza returned to the hallway and went into first grade classrooms 8 and 10. he kill 15d children and two teachers in classroom 8 and five children and two teachers in classroom 10. lanza was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in classroom 10. police believe lanza shot his mother four times at their home before heading to the school. the report provides new details about lanza's life, including a preoccupation with mass shootings, in particular the columbine shootings. a spreadsheet with mass murders over the years listing information about each shooting. investigators found a computer game titled "school shooting" and images of lanza holding a handgun to his head. before the shooting, lanza's mother nancy became concerned that her son "hadn't gone anywhere in three months and would only communicate with her by e-mail." the report also addressed lanza's mental health saying he was diagnosed with asperger's in 2005 and was described by doctors who treated him as presenting with significant
4:34 pm
social impairments and extreme anxiety. it was also noted that he lacked empathy. but those doctors did not see anything that would have predicted his future behavior. data from adam lanza's g.p.s. showed he was me the vicinity of sandy hook elementary school the day before the shooting. scott, the families of the victims were briefed on this report and chose not to comment today. >> pelley: elaine, thank you very much. now on to another important story breaking this evening. severe weather has taken lives and is making a mess of things before the holiday. a storm system blamed for at least ten deaths is on the move from texas and is headed toward the northeast as millions of americans head to the highways and airports for thanksgiving. anna werner is in dallas for us tonight. anna? >> reporter: scott, half of the dead and many of those injured in storm-related traffic accidents were here in texas.

parts of west texas got as much as five inches of snow, but it was ice that caused the most travel problems. nearly 500 flights were canceled at dallas fort worth airport. evan van doren was trying to get to indiana. >> i look forward to thanksgiving all year long. having a day cut off this trip is not the best thing in the world for me. >> reporter: icy conditions crept east into oklahoma, causing this s.u.v. to flip over and a 12-car pileup in arkansas. the mayhem kept tommy easter ling and his wrecking service busy. >> people don't realize when they cross those bridges that they've got ice on them. when they cross it, they lose it. >> reporter: but the same system was a welcome holiday boost for ski areas in colorado. they expect their best season in six years. and in utah tonight rescuers are searching for five college students who were on a backpacking trip about three hours southeast of salt lake city. scott, those students were expected to return from their

4:37 pm
facing skepticism from congress and israel president obama defended the deal with iran as a victory for diplomacy over war. >> we can not close the door on diplomacy and we can not rule out peaceful solutions to the world's problems. we can not commit ourselves to an endless cycle of conflict. and tough talk and bluster may be the easy thing to do politically, but it's not the right thing for our security. >> reporter: israeli prime minister netanyahu rejected the deal because it leaves iran's uranium enrichment capabilities and thi thus the machinery to ma nuclear bomb in place. >> israel is not bound by this agreement. we can not and will not allow a regime that calls for the destruction of israel to obtain the means to achieve this goal. we will not allow iran to have a nuclear weapons capability. >> i do think it was the sanctions and the threat of military action that brought the'rians to the table. >> reporter: new york congressman elliot engel-- top
4:38 pm
democrat on the foreign affairs committee and author of a new tougher set of sanctions against iran-- wants the white house to keep up the pressure. >> the iranians are talking about how this agreement won the right to enrich. they don't have the right to enrich and we need to make it very clear to them. >> reporter: the president's advisors say a military strike remains an option if iran doesn't live up to this agreement but with economic sanctions being eased and a second round of negotiations beginning that threat, scott, appears more distant that ever. >> pelley: major, thank you. so how is this playing in iran? elizabeth palmer has that part of the story. >> reporter: for iranians desperate for sanctions relief, the geneva deal delivered as soon as it was signed. iran's currency started gathering strength-- to the relief of business owners in tehran's bazaar. that has man put it "75 million people finally slept well last night." happy crowds turned out to cheer the iranian negotiators as they arrived back in tehran.
